Chapter Eleven

Afternoon turned into evening and both Rhys and Rain were antsy from waiting. Rhys was currently on watch while Rain slept on the floor of the abandoned house. He hated that she was lying on the dirty carpet. She should be in a comfortable bed, surrounded by pillows and warmth.

Ever since his wolf had claimed her, Rhys was feeling even more protective. He wouldn’t stop her from fighting. The tribe needed her. Instead of tucking her away safely on the reservation, he was going to train Rain to be the best at protecting their people.

Rhys was in line to take over for his father, and eventually, Rain would be his bride. He wasn’t ready to make that commitment yet. His animals were on board, but they had to mate first, and that was something he would wait for until this was all over. He’d told her they needed to talk about it, and they would.

Rhys frowned when raindrops formed on the old window. The evening was turning brisk, and he felt the wind blow through the cracked walls of the old clapboard house. It wasn’t sturdy nor was it inhabitable. They shouldn’t even be in there, because the thing was likely to crumble from one strong gust of wind.

They had another forty-five minutes before the sun set completely, giving them the darkness needed to go after the children. A light was on in the front living room of the house where the kids were being held. He hadn’t seen anyone pass by in about an hour.

From what he knew, there were two human males and the three children. With the third human gone, it would be easy to take the other two out. His only hope was that they were safe and his assumptions were correct. One thing Colton had taught him was to never assume anything…be prepared for the worst.

“Rhys?” Rain mumbled as she woke. “What time is it?”

“We have forty-five minutes left before dusk,” he informed her, looking over his shoulder as she sat up, stretching from her sleep. His eyes caught a flash of her light brown skin as her shirt lifted at the waist. His mouth watered and his bear rumbled in his head. The wolf and cougar whined, reminding him how much they wanted her for a mate.

I know. I want her too. Please be patient with me.

The animals inside him hummed their agreement. Rain rearranged her hair from her ponytail to a tight bun as he tried to keep watch out the window. It was hard not to watch her as her scent drifted across his senses. If he could bottle it up, he’d name it after her and wear it on his skin every day.

The streetlights flickered as the sun finally dropped below the horizon, leaving only pinks, yellows, and orange colors in the sky. “We need to go.”

“I’m ready,” Rain announced, standing from where she was sitting on the floor. They both dusted off their clothes and hurried down the stairs. Rhys watched her every move, noting how she took care with the busted steps.
